STEVE FLETCHER AND NEIL YOUNG
|
Neil Young and Steve Fletcher are both devoted to their club and always find time for the fans. They are my joint favourite players at the club and I admire their efforts.
Both Neil and Steve have been struggling with long-term injuries in recent years but both have also fought back well against these ans come back which shows their mental strength and total commitment to the club. Neil came back midway through the 2001-02 campaign and captained the side against Brighton with no match practice after his recovery from injury. Neil featured in arguably the greatest Cherries team that I have ever seen which reached Wembley, when he and Jamie Vincent at left-back both bagged their fair share of goals.
Steve came back midway through the 2002-03 season and has linked up well with both Alan Connell and Warren Feeney. The ultimate Cherries front pairing was Fletch and Defoe because Jermain used to feed off Fletch's knock-downs and this created lots of goals for the Cherries. Fletch has great strength and bags of character which has made him a fans favourite. Neil has an experienced and calm mind which helps him read situations he is posed with well. These qualities rub off on our other players and help the team to keep a watertight defence.

Here are some action pictures of the duo and some bits and pieces about them.

STEVE FLETCHER. aka: "Super Fletch", "Daddy Fletch".
Steve Fletcher, whose testimonial will be against Portsmouth later this month, was signed from Hartlepool in 1992 and has earned respect amongst many Cherries fans (except the Main Stand residents who seem to jump to critisise him at the first chance). Fletch combines strength, character and experience to create a player who is such a key to the Cherries attack which is often rendered toothless without him. Fletch can often get frustrated with other players, himself and mostly referees but it's good to see that Steve has learned to channel that into his play.

NEIL YOUNG. aka "Younger"
Neil is still a very capable player after many years in the team. "Younger" is very good at getting forward down the right wing, in the past with James Hayter and more recently with Wade Elliott. His experience always helps out our defence, showcased in the defensive nightmare scenarios of 2002/03 when twice we had an outfield player in goal and countless other times inexperienced keepers and Neil was there to help organised a very young backline. Neil gives the other players a confidence boost just by stepping on the pitch and his discipline is a credit to the club. Could improve his shooting skills slightly.
